Just Another Day

A couple of years back, I wrote this. It’s sad how its relevancy is always going to be there.

Woke up in the morning

to see a flood of messages

‘happy women’s day’

they said.

Woke up in the morning

after a good night’s sleep

to see people celebrating women

like they never did before.

Woke up in the morning

and saw my peers wishing me

happy women’s day they said

but it doesn’t feel like one I said.

Woke up in the morning

and checked the news

for maybe another girl in the world

wouldn’t see the light of 8th.

Woke up in the morning

to see a flood of messages

but I didn’t feel like replying

for a woman’s worth doesn’t rely on the 8th.

Woke up in the morning

with a heart full of anger

for all my girlfriends

were still scared to go out at night.

Woke up in the morning

with a thought of running the world

but that doesn’t work in real life

after all, life isn’t all Beyoncé.

Woke up in the morning

thinking of today as a normal day

but wishes flooded

in the midst of an unfair world.

Woke up in the morning

opened Instagram and read comments

women were chastised for being themselves

how do you call it women’s day?

Woke up in the morning

with a heart full of anger

for no day can determine

the worth of women

and no wishes can diminish

the pain we go through

during the rest of 364 days.
